Dear Families,

Parenting is not a small, easy thing to do, and the pandemic has made it even tougher. Last week, George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police left this already grieving country in turmoil. Parents are wondering about how to talk with our children about George Floyd’s death, and about race, racism, bias, justice, and taking a stand against racism.

UUCE is firmly committed to inclusion and justice. Our faith formation program mission is "We nurture compassionate community, inspire spiritual exploration, and promote justice in service to our world." As Unitarian Universalists we embrace our questions, and our children’s questions, affirming and promoting our responsibility to search for truth and meaning (4th Principle). Many parents, especially white parents and parents of white children, are seeking ways to speak openly and honestly with children in order to interrupt the cycles of systemic racism in this country. Please remember that it’s okay to say “I don’t know” and then look for answers.

You can start the conversation with your kids by asking what they know. Remain curious and open. Here are some tools that may help you and your family:

• Talk to children about racism

• A parent's guide to preventing and responding to prejudice

• Resources for talking to children about race and racism

• Dr. Kira Banks—Talking to Kids About Racism webinar, part 1

• Dr. Kira Banks—Talking to Kids About Racism webinar, part 2 (airs 6/3)

• "Explaining Charlottesville to my 7-year-old"

If UUCE and the faith formation program can help your family navigate hard times, please reach out.
