Honest, accurate information about sexuality changes lives. It dismantles stereotypes and assumptions, builds self-acceptance and self-esteem, fosters healthy relationships, improves decision making, and has the potential to save lives. For these reasons and more, we are proud to offer Our Whole Lives here at UUCE.
Our Whole Lives – also known as OWL – is a comprehensive, lifespan sexuality education curricula designed by the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ. It reflects the values of our faith and provides accurate, age-appropriate sexuality information, helping participants make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior.
“I found an inclusive and welcoming community in my OWL group – it was a space where I felt comfortable talking about questions I had! I highly recommend the OWL program as an educational and community building experience that can really help youth understand their sexuality.”
– Sophia Warner, 8-9th OWL graduate
OWL for 8-9th graders is offered in-house every other year. This year, class will begin on October 26th and will run from 7:00-8:30 p.m. every Wednesday from late October to late-March (with the exception of holidays). A detailed program calendar will be provided at the parent orientation session.
Coming up in late September is an opportunity for middle school parents who are considering OWL for their 8-9th graders. There will be two parent orientation sessions offered. Your attendance at one of these sessions is required for your child to participate: September 25th from 11:30-1:30 and October 5th from 6:30-8:30. You do not need to decide right away whether or not OWL is the right program for your child – there will be time to process information and to ask any questions you might have about the material. I strongly encourage all parents involved in your child’s life to attend the orientation meetings so that you can make a decision as a family about entering your child into the program. Please remember that the parent orientation sessions are for parents only.
In addition, an interfaith OWL class for 10-12th graders is offered in cooperation with the First Congregationalist, First Methodist, and First Christian Churches, also every other year. This class will be offered beginning in January of 2017.
Other OWL classes are offered when there is a critical mass of interest: K-1st, 4-6th, Young Adult, and Adult are also available. We have taught 4-6th and a combo Young Adult-Adult class in the last few years.
Copies of the Our Whole Lives curricula can be found in the DRE office. Parents are welcome to look through it at any time.
