A RITE of PASSAGE PROGRAM for YOUTH in 8TH-9TH GRADE

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

In the Coming of Age program, families and youth will participate in a program that recognizes the growing capacities of adolescent children for responsibility and autonomy, spirituality and depth, while still offering the nurturing and protection young people need.

  • Weekly sessions for youth
  • Monthly check-ins for parents
  • Two major retreat weekends
  • Occasional special events
  • A mentor relationship with a practicing UU.

YOUTH EXPERIENCE

EXPLORATION OF SELF:

What do you believe? And why? Who are you, and how do you define yourself?

LEARNING FROM/WITH OTHERS:

Work with a mentor. Develop positive relationships with all ages. Practice teamwork.

REACHING OUT:

Serve others and the world. Work for a greater good.

SPIRITUAL PRACTICE:

Explore many ways to commune with the divine. Rites of passage. Create worship for others. Write a personal Credo.

SAMPLE SCHEDULE OUTLINE (TAKEN FROM 2015-16 PROGRAM)

OCTOBER:

  • October 18, 2015, 12:00-1:00 Family Information Session (BYO brown bag lunch)

NOVEMBER:

  • November 21, 2015 – Mentor applications due.

DECEMBER:

  • December 6, 2015 – Participant applications and family commitment due.

JANUARY:

  • Coming of Age begins!! January 15-16, 2016 – COA Retreat Overnight at UUCE
  • January 15, 2016 – Family Dinner and first COA parent group meeting – 6:00-9:00pm
  • January 16, 2016 – 8:30-10:00am, Mentor/Mentee Breakfast
  • Youth paired with Mentors
  • Starting Tuesday, January 19, 2016 Weekly COA sessions – 6:30-8:00

FEBRUARY:

  • Tuesdays – 6:30-8:00 Weekly COA sessions
  • Two meetings with Mentor (TBD)
  • 2nd Tuesday COA parent group, February 9, 2016, 7:00-8:00

MARCH:

  • Tuesdays – 6:30-8:00 Weekly COA sessions
  • Two meetings with Mentor (TBD)
  • 2nd Tuesday COA parent group, March 8, 2016, 7:00-8:00

APRIL:

  • Tuesdays – 6:30-8:00 Weekly COA sessions
  • Two meetings with Mentor (TBD)
  • 2nd Tuesday COA parent group, April 12, 2016, 7:00-8:00

  • Sunday Ropes Course, May 1st
  • Tuesdays – 6:30-8:00 Weekly COA sessions
  • One meeting with Mentor (TBD)
  • 2nd Tuesday COA parent group  May 10, 2016, 7:00-8:00
  • May 13-15, 2016 – Rite of Passage and Vision Quest Weekend

JUNE:

  • June 4, 2016 – Credo Dinner
  • June 5, 2016 – Bridging Sunday

Ropes course, Inipi ceremony, social justice activity – dates TBA. (As much as possible, these activities will be scheduled to take place following Sunday services.)
