Dear Parents/Guardians of Youth in Grades 10-12,

As we have done in the past, youth leaders from our own Unitarian Universalist Church, as well as folks from First Congregational United Church of Christ, First Christian Church, and First United Methodist Church family have been dreaming and planning for a joint “Our Whole Lives Sexuality and Our Faith” group for our high school youth in grades 10 – 12.   We are excited to bring our youth and leaders together.  We are pleased to invite your family to participate in this experience and to invite you to help us get the word out to other youth and families. All youth in grades 10-12 are welcome – affiliation with a congregation is not required!  To register go to: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/10ReUQ8bCnbYD3lK9BeTADGXerOa5Yy6XZy9DDAXfAp8/viewform?ts=583f50f1&edit_requested=true

Our Whole Lives Sexuality and Our Faith (OWL) is a positive, comprehensive, and age-appropriate educational program that promotes sexual health. OWL was developed by the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ and is based in the core values of self-worth, sexual health, responsibility and justice and inclusivity. Youth appreciate OWL’s content and process and the community of diverse peer support that develops along the way.  Parents appreciate the comprehensive information it offers youth at this important time in their development.

The group will meet on Tuesday evenings beginning January 24 and end by spring break and will include a Friday evening/Saturday retreat. We’ll send out a detailed schedule after the first of the year. Classes will meet at First Congregational UCC.  Families will be enlisted to help with snacks. The facilitators, all trained in the OWL program, come from our four congregations.

We are inviting you to attend a Parent/Guardian Orientation.  There are two opportunities to participate: You need only come to one session.  If the young person in your life has already participated in OWL, we encourage but don’t require you to attend an orientation. For those new to the OWL program, parent orientation is strongly encouraged. The orientations will be:

  • Thursday, January 12, 2016 from 7 – 9 p.m. at First Congregational
  • Tuesday, January 19, 2016 from 7 – 9 p.m. at First Congregational.

You will meet some of the OWL teaching team, learn about OWL values and assumptions and topics covered, and preview OWL materials. The orientation session is for parents only.  The youth will be oriented to the program in their first session on January 24. Thanks for putting one of these orientation dates on your calendar now and for sharing this opportunity with other parents of teens in grades 10-12.

Our Whole Lives Sexuality and Our Faith is the best human sexuality curriculum there is.  We look forward to sharing OWL with you and your family in the safety and support of our church family.  Thank you for sharing this opportunity with other youth/families you know!
